New Meritor SimilAir™ Composite Trailer Spring Delivers Smooth Ride and Less Maintenance

TROY, Mich. (Feb. 16, 2006) – ArvinMeritor’s Commercial Vehicle Systems (CVS) business today announced the availability of its new Meritor SimilAir™ Composite Trailer Spring for linehaul and general service applications.  The Meritor SimilAir is a composite mechanical spring that delivers ride quality close to that of an air suspension with much lower initial and life cycle costs.

“Meritor’s SimilAir is breakthrough technology that delivers the smooth ride operators expect from an air suspension without the added maintenance, weight and cost,” said Robert Zirlin, director of Product Planning and Development for North American Trailer Products.  “What sets this spring apart from other mechanical systems is its composite material, which offers numerous performance and bottom-line advantages to fleets and end-users.”

The composite spring assembly is more durable and provides a significant weight and cost savings.  Suspensions equipped with this new composite spring weigh as much as 240 lbs. less than the lightest air suspensions, and over 100 lbs. less than popular mechanical suspensions.  It also offers less maintenance than air suspensions, and is more corrosion resistant than steel springs.

Compared to air suspensions or steel mechanical suspensions, a Meritor SimilAir composite spring-equipped suspension offers many distinct advantages, including:

  • No air springs, shock absorbers or leveling valves (vs. air)
  • Drive-home capability –  greatly reduces potential for costly roadside maintenance
  • Mechanical suspension performance at the dock (i.e. no dock walk)
  • Significantly reduces unwanted vibration and noise compared to steel springs

The Meritor SimilAir Composite Spring was originally targeted at mechanical suspension users who were considering air ride suspensions, but did not want the cost penalty and maintenance requirements.  During field evaluations, it attracted significant interest on the part of current air suspension users as well.

“While composite springs have been available on mechanical trailer suspensions for many years, they have represented a niche of extremely weight sensitive customers,” said Zirlin.  “By optimizing the ride quality and overall performance offered, the new Meritor SimilAir spring has much broader market appeal.”

Meritor SimilAir is a joint effort between ArvinMeritor and Liteflex, LLC.  The two companies announced, last month, the signing of a long-term agreement granting ArvinMeritor exclusive distributorship of Liteflex® truck, trailer and specialty vehicle composite mechanical springs for North America and several other key global markets.

ArvinMeritor Extends Agreement with Liteflex(R) for Increased Focus on Composites

TROY, Mich., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- ArvinMeritor's Commercial Vehicle Systems business announced today that it has signed a long-term agreement with Liteflex, LLC to be the exclusive distributor of Liteflex(R) truck, trailer, and specialty vehicle composite mechanical springs. The agreement is effective immediately for North America and several other global markets, and extends the existing agreement that originated in 2003.

"We are pleased to extend this agreement with Liteflex to a long-term arrangement, not only for ourselves but more importantly for our customers," said Sergio Carvalho, vice president and general manager, ArvinMeritor Trailer Products. "In the relatively short amount of time this venture has been in place, we have been able to offer tremendous advantages to our customers through the benefits of composite technology."

"Continuing this agreement is a win-win scenario not only for our companies, but particularly for fleets and end-users that will gain from lightweight composite technology," said Daniel Chien, Vice President, Liteflex Sales and Engineering. "Liteflex's composite design and processing expertise and ArvinMeritor's sales and marketing presence and undercarriage engineering expertise have proven to be a great fit."

Going forward, the two companies will jointly develop integrated composite suspension modules and systems to address the need for lighter weight and better riding suspensions. A prime example of this is the SimilAir(R) composite trailer spring, which has been successfully field tested in over 100 trailers since August 2004, and will be launched early next year. The collaboration between ArvinMeritor and Liteflex will also provide the opportunity to pursue the use of composite technologies in components beyond springs.

"We've already seen the wide-ranging benefits composite mechanical springs can offer fleets and end-users," commented Carvalho. "Our combined expertise will allow us to build on what exists today to take composite technologies to the next level."

These heavy duty springs will be manufactured at Liteflex facilities in Dayton, Ohio. The company has produced over 15 million composite leaf springs for European and North American automotive and commercial vehicles over the past 24 years.
